What Are Multiplication Word Problems?

Word problems are real-life situations that we solve using math. Multiplication word problems help us find totals when we have equal groups.

Example: 5 boxes × 6 ladoos = 30 ladoos

Instead of adding 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6, we multiply: 5 × 6 = 30

Solved Example: Step by Step

Problem: Priya buys 5 boxes of ladoos from a Mumbai sweet shop. Each box contains 6 ladoos. How many ladoos does Priya buy in total?

Math problem showing 5 boxes each with 6 ladoos, illustrating 5 boxes × 6 ladoos = 30 ladoos total.

Solution:

Step 1 - Read: Priya buys 5 boxes, each box has 6 ladoos

Step 2 - Numbers: 5 boxes and 6 ladoos

Step 3 - Keyword: "Each box contains" means multiply

Step 4 - Multiplication: 5 × 6 = 30

Step 5 - Answer: Priya buys 30 ladoos in total!

Keywords Reference Chart

  • Each / For every one – indicates items distributed equally (e.g., "Each student gets 5 books")

Common Mistakes & Tips

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Wrong Operation: Using addition instead of multiplication when you see "each" or "every"
    • Wrong: 3 bags with 4 apples = 3 + 4 = 7
    • Correct: 3 × 4 = 12 apples
  • Missing the Question: Solving for the wrong thing—read what's being asked!
  • Forgetting Units: Writing "42" instead of "42 pencils" or "₹60"
  • Two-Step Confusion: In challenge problems, forgetting to do both steps
    • Example: Find total first (8 × 12 = 96), then subtract (96 - 15 = 81)

Top 5 Pro-Tips:

  1. Read Twice: Once quickly, then slowly to find important details
  2. Underline Numbers: Circle or underline the numbers you need
  3. Look for Keywords: "Each", "every", "per", "groups of" signal multiplication
  4. Draw Pictures: Visual learners—sketch boxes, groups, or objects
  5. Check Your Answer: Does it make sense? Use addition to verify small problems
